NO Secret Santa instead optional donation to......

This weekend at our Christmas Breakfast we have the option available to our members to make a donation for our chosen charity, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia in Australia.

This organisation supports young Ethiopian women who suffer obstetric fistula. This condition is an abnormal communication between the vagina and the lower urinary tract and or vagina rectum.

Prolonged obstructed labour is the most... common cause. The average length of labour for a woman with an obstetric fistula is four days and more than 90% of these babies are stillborn.

With the prolonged pressure of the baby's head in the pelvis, the blood supply to the tissues between the baby's head and the mother's pelvis is severely compromised. As the tissue dies, abnormal communication ( a hole) occurs between the mother's vagina and pelvis structures. The woman will leak urine And or faeces continuously through the vagina via this abnormal communication or fistula.

It is estimated that 18 000 Ethiopian women face obstructed labour each year! Half of them will die. The other half will lose their baby and gain a fistula.

The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital is the worlds first dedicated fistula hospital, built in 1974 to treat Ethiopian women free of charge.

It is thanks to the generosity of donors all over the world, that this hospital offers free services for women who could otherwise not be able to seek treatment.
