On Sunday 13 May at 53 events across Australia, 125,000 men, women and
children walked or ran in the 2012 Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic. It was the 15th year of the event and for the first time the Mother’s
Day Classic was truly national with every capital city hosting an event
together with a record 45 regional locations.
This was noted with great pride by our Governor-General and Mother’s
Day Classic Patron, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO, when she
launched the 2012 event at Yarralumla in February.
A highlight of 2012 was the huge increase in the number of regional
events and participation. There were 45 regional events compared to 27
in the previous years with Victoria hosting events in 17 locations
outside Melbourne.Hamilton Island was joined by Kangaroo Island, and rural Australia and
the remote mining communities joined in alongside larger regional
centres like Ballarat, Cairns, and Newcastle.
There were first time events in Alice Springs, Barham, Camden,
Chinchilla, Darwin, Geraldton, Kingaroy, Kangaroo Island, Lysterfield,
Macedon Ranges, Orange, Rupanyup, Sunshine Coasts, Tambo, Tocumwal,
Wagga Wagga and Yerong Creek.
Mother's day generosity knows no bounds
Together we have raised a record $4 million at the 2012 Women in
Super’s Mother’s Day Classic.
This year’s success brings to $14.8 million the total funds raised in
15 years by you and all past participants for the National Breast
Cancer Foundation (NBCF) and its research programs.
Mother’s Day Classic National Chair Louise Davidson said that this
year’s fundraising success builds on more than $3 million raised at
last year’s event. Louise said, “I am absolutely delighted that we
could raise such a substantial sum for the life saving work undertaken
by the NBCF.
“Cancer touches the lives of so many Australians, so it’s no surprise
that the generous community support continues to rise each and every
year,” said Louise.
