Reading Food Labels

What exactly are you buying when you pick up a packaged food product?

Looking at the ingredients label  can tell you a lot about what is in the product. However you also need to know what that information means and how it can affect your decision whether to purchase.

Did you know that the ingredients are listed in order of the most amount to the least ?  So for example  if sugar is listed first, second or third - perhaps you should be cautious since this indicates there will be a substantial amount in the product.

So what quantity of certain ingredients should influence your decision whether a  food product is a good purchase for your nutritional health?

As a rule of thumb the following is a good guide -

1. Always look at the 100g column on the nutrition guide - this is the usually the last column

2. Total Fat-  LESS than 3g
3.Saturated Fat (this is the bad fat for your health) - LESS than 1.5g
4.Sugar - Less than 5g
5.Sodium (salt) - LESS than 120mg - check out your cheese label!
6.Fibre - MORE than 8g

When Jennifer Hill from R Health spoke to the club last year , she gave all who attended a food guide card. This card tabled the above points which fits perfectly in your purse so  while doing the shopping its easy to pull it out and compare the amounts.  So why not make up your own business size card and begin to make healthy choices. If there is an indication of interest the Club can organise Jennifer to speak again. Please let Donna know to register your interest.
